COVID-19 can cause a variety of symptoms including neurological symptoms. Although most people with COVID-19 get better within weeks of illness, some people experience post-COVID conditions. Post-COVID conditions are a wide range of new, returning, or ongoing health problems people can experience four or more weeks after first being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 according to the CDC.
An early study from China found dizziness to be the most common neurological symptom of COVID-19 with headaches second most common. A 2020 study looking at patients hospitalized with COVID-19 found that 29% reported dizziness or vertigo. Additional possible neurological symptoms include loss of taste and smell, hearing loss, and light sensitivity.
COVID-19 can also cause dizziness and imbalance by causing vestibular neuritis. Vestibular neuritis can be caused by a variety of viral infections and typically results in a vestibular hypofunction or weakness in the inner ear system. Treatment for dizziness due to COVID-19 is similar to treatments for other causes of vestibular neuritis.
At NDBC we combine Physicians, Audiologists, Physical Therapists, and Occupational Therapists, all within each facility to offer a TRUE multidisciplinary approach to assess and treat your Post-COVID symptoms. After your medical history has been reviewed, our physician will perform a Neurologic Examination to screen out red flags and to being to identify possible sources of post- COVID symptoms. Our doctor may then order diagnostic tests and a physical therapy evaluation, designed to assess what aspects of your vestibular system are contributing to your current symptoms. Once your tests are complete you will be with the Physician or Physician Assistant to determine your plan of care.
